SOPAC: Configuring Internet Explorer to Access SOPAC Anonymous FTP Server Data
If you are having problems accessing files from our ftp server, such as RINEX data or log files, and you're using Internet Explorer 5.5 / 6.0+, you may need to change the settings on your browser. In particular, if you are receiving this error message:

"Internet Explorer was not able to to open this Internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later."

you need to change your browser settings. Many links on the SOPAC website access data from the SOPAC ftp server at garner.ucsd.edu. This server requires users to login as "anonymous", with an e-mail password that includes the "@" symbol.

Newer versions of Internet Explorer, under newer Microsoft operating systems such as Windows XP or Windows 2000, do not set the default login name and password to the above. To change this:

  1. Enter ftp://garner.ucsd.edu as the (url) location. This may change the browser to an ftp-specific version.
  2. If a login window does not pop up, select File->Login As
  3. Click the "Login Anonymously" option
  4. Enter your e-mail address as the password. Include the @ symbol.
  5. Exit, and re-start Internet Explorer.
You will now be able to access files from the SOPAC ftp server using Internet Explorer.

Another option is to install an ftp service on your PC such as CuteFTP, or to use ftp from a DOS window if available.

Please contact the SOPAC webmaster if problems persist.
